"The Playboy of the Western World" is a three-act play written by John
Millington Synge and first performed in 1907. Set in County Mayo, Ireland,
during the early 1900s, the play tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man
who claims to have killed his father and becomes a town hero. However, when
his father shows up alive, the townspeople turn against Christy. Riots broke
out during the play's opening performance due to its perceived offense to
public morals and Irish nationalism. The play has been adapted for the stage,
opera, film, and television. It is based on a true story and features
